Case IH 55062 – STEERING: Measured 'Steering Wheel Motion Signal A' voltage is out of range

The steering control system has detected a mismatch between the operator's commanded steering input at the steering wheel and the actual pressure/motion signal being returned by the Orbitrol (the hydraulic steering unit). The voltage from the steering motion sensor (Signal A) has fallen outside the acceptable calibrated range, indicating a potential sensor failure, wiring issue, or hydraulic pressure discrepancy in the steering valve.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Steering Controller to the Orbitrol steering valve sensor for chafed wires, pinched harnesses in the steering column, or corroded pins in the connector.

   Back-probe the steering motion sensor connector to verify it is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a solid ground.

   Using a multimeter or CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), monitor 'Signal A' while slowly turning the steering wheel. Look for dead spots, erratic voltage spikes, or drop-offs that confirm a failed sensor potentiometer/transducer.

   Verify that the standby and active hydraulic pressures at the Orbitrol valve are within OEM specifications, as a severe hydraulic pressure drop can trigger a signal mismatch code.

   Depressurize and Disconnect

   Turn off the machine, relieve hydraulic pressure from the steering circuit by turning the wheel back and forth, and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits.

   Access the Orbitrol Valve

   Remove the steering column covers or access panels to reach the Orbitrol steering unit and its attached sensors.

   Replace the Sensor/Valve

   If the steering motion sensor (Signal A) is serviced separately, disconnect its pigtail, unthread the sensor from the Orbitrol block, and install the new sensor. If the sensor is integrated, the entire Orbitrol steering valve assembly must be replaced by disconnecting the hydraulic lines (cap them immediately) and unbolting the unit from the steering shaft.

   Reassembly

   Install the new component, reconnect the hydraulic lines (if removed), and plug in the electrical connector.

   Bleed the System

   If hydraulic lines were opened, top off the hydraulic fluid and bleed the steering system according to the service manual by turning the wheel lock-to-lock several times while the engine is running.

   Calibration

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, clear the 55062 fault code, and perform a steering calibration procedure so the Steering Controller can learn the new sensor's center and end-stop voltage values.
