Case IH 5508 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Auxiliary Valve Spool Sensor Shorted To Power
Issue description
The spool sensor monitors the physical position of the auxiliary hydraulic valve spool. A "shorted to power" condition means the control module is receiving a voltage signal from the sensor that is higher than the maximum allowable threshold (typically indicating a short to a 5V reference or 12V battery power, or an internal sensor failure). This triggers a "White" master telltale warning lamp on the instrument cluster.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Auxiliary Valve Spool Sensor (connector X-23) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture/water ingress, or bent terminals.
With the sensor disconnected and the key ON, use a multimeter to check the signal wire at the harness connector. If it reads 5V or 12V, the wiring harness is shorted to power and must be repaired.
If the harness voltage is normal, the internal circuitry of the spool sensor has likely failed and is shorting the reference voltage directly to the signal return.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Valve Block
Tilt the cab or remove the necessary access panels to reach the main hydraulic control valve assembly.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Auxiliary Valve Spool Sensor. Unbolt or unthread the sensor from the auxiliary spool housing. Note: Clean the area around the sensor before removal to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic valve block.
Install the New Sensor
Install the replacement spool sensor into the valve block. Tighten to the torque specification listed in your specific model's service manual.
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor. Ensure the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Turn the key ON. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 5508 fault code. You may need to perform an Electro-Hydraulic (EH) calibration procedure for the auxiliary spool so the UCM can learn the new sensor's neutral, minimum, and maximum voltage values.
