Case IH 55081 – Tractor Management Controller (TMF), Auto-Guidance Controller (NavController), or Steering Controller: Movement commanded to the 'Front Steer' does not match the movement detected
Issue description
This fault indicates a closed-loop control error within the tractor's Auto-Guidance or steer-by-wire system. The system's controller is commanding the hydraulic steering valve to turn the front wheels to a specific angle, but the feedback sensor (the wheel angle sensor or front steer potentiometer) is either reporting no movement or a movement that does not match the commanded position.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- STX Steiger
- Magnum
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Steiger
- 7120
- 8250
Check the cause
Check the physical linkage of the wheel angle sensor (front steer potentiometer) on the front axle for damage, disconnected rods, or loose mounting hardware.
Trace the wiring harness from the steering sensor back to the main harness. Look for breaks, chafing, or moisture ingress in the connectors, which is a common cause of signal loss.
Ensure the steering control valve is receiving the electrical signal and outputting hydraulic pressure to the steering cylinders.
Attempt to perform a "Wheel Angle Sensor and Steering Valve calibration" via the AFS Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display. If the sensor is completely dead, the calibration will fail.
Repair steps
Isolate the Sensor
If wiring tests confirm the harness is good but the sensor voltage/resistance is out of range, the sensor must be replaced.
Replace the Component
For external sensors: Unbolt the sensor from the front axle, disconnect the linkage rod, plug in the new sensor, and mount it securely. For internal sensors (common on Flagship combines and some newer tractors): The sensor is built directly into the steering cylinder. You cannot replace just the sensor; you must remove and replace the entire steering cylinder assembly.
Recalibrate
Turn on the tractor and navigate to the ISObus or steering settings page on the display. Perform a full Wheel Angle Sensor and Steering Valve calibration.
Clear Codes
Navigate to the "INFO" > "FAULTS" screen on the display and select "CLEAR FAULT" to remove the inactive code.
Parts you might need
(2)Wheel Angle Sensor / Front Steer Potentiometer (External)
Generic part name for tractors with externally mounted sensors.
Steering Cylinder Assembly (Internal Sensor)
Required for machines where the sensor is integrated into the cylinder (e.g., Case IH Flagship combines).
