Case IH 55082 – Steering Control Module: Articulation/Steering Movement Mismatch

Issue description

A closed-loop control error in the steering system where the control module sends an electrical command to the rear steer (or articulation) hydraulic control valve to move the chassis, but the feedback from the steering position sensor does not detect the expected physical movement.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • STX-275
  • STX-375
  • STX-450
  • Steiger Series
  • 4490
  • 4690
  • 4890

Check the cause

  1. Hydraulic Pilot Screen Check: Inspect if the pilot screen in the rear steer valve is plugged, which prevents the valve from moving the hydraulics despite receiving the electrical command.

  2. Position Sensor Sweep Test: Inspect the rear steer/articulation position sensor and its mechanical linkage, using a multimeter to verify the sensor provides a smooth, linear voltage change without dropouts or dead spots.

  3. Wiring Harness Inspection: Check the wiring harness between the steering position sensor, the steering control valve solenoids, and the ECU for chafed wires, corrosion in the connectors, or open circuits.

  4. Hydraulic Pressure Test: Verify that the steering circuit is receiving adequate hydraulic pressure from the priority valve.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the steering wheel and hydraulic levers.

  2. Clean the Pilot Screen

Locate the rear steer control valve assembly. Remove the 1-inch hex plug on the valve to access the pilot screen. Carefully remove the screen (watch for the tension spring) and clean out any debris.

  3. Replace the Filter

Replace the dedicated rear steer hydraulic filter located next to the control valve.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the hydraulic side is clear and the fault persists, disconnect the rear steer position sensor. Install a replacement position sensor and securely attach its mechanical linkage.

  5. Clear Fault Code

Power on the tractor and clear fault code 55082 using the AFS Pro monitor or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  6. Perform Steering Calibration

Perform the steering/articulation calibration procedure as outlined in the service manual to teach the ECU the new sensor's center, left, and right limits.
