Case IH 5511 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Implausible Loader Arm Sensor State Vs Loader Arm Command - Stuck Spool Or PRV

Issue description

This is a severe (Red) electro-hydraulic (EH) system fault. It indicates that the control module has commanded the loader arm hydraulic spool to move (via the Proportional Reducing Valve, or PRV), but the spool position sensor is reporting that the spool has not moved to the expected position, or is moving when not commanded. This mismatch typically means the physical spool is jammed inside the valve body, the PRV is stuck due to debris/failure, or the position sensor has failed.

Check the cause

  1. Check hydraulic fluid level and condition. Contaminated fluid or metal shavings are the leading cause of a stuck PRV or spool.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the UCM, loader arm PRV solenoids, and spool position sensor. Look for rubbed wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins that could cause a loss of signal.

  3. Swap the loader arm PRV with the bucket PRV to isolate a PRV failure. If the fault code changes from 5511 to 5512, the PRV is the culprit. If it remains 5511, the issue is likely the sensor or a jammed spool.

  4. Monitor the loader arm spool position sensor voltage using the electronic service tool (EST) or advanced instrument cluster diagnostics while commanding movement to see if the sensor reading is erratic or dead.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Lower the loader arms completely to the ground. Turn off the engine and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the controls. Disconnect the battery.

  2. Access the Control Valve

    Lift the cab or remove the necessary access panels to reach the main hydraulic control valve block.

  3. Inspect and Clean the PRV

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the loader arm PRV. Unscrew the PRV cartridge from the valve block. Inspect the O-rings for damage and the screens for debris. Clean the valve with brake cleaner and compressed air. If the internal plunger does not move freely, replace the PRV.

  4. Check Spool Movement

    With the PRV removed, gently check if the main hydraulic spool can move. If the spool is physically scored or seized in the bore, the entire control valve section (or block) may need to be replaced.

  5. Replace the Sensor (If Applicable)

    If the valve and spool are mechanically sound, remove and replace the EH spool position sensor located on the end cap of the loader arm valve section.

  6. Reassembly and Calibration

    Reinstall the components and torque to OEM specs. Reconnect the battery. You must perform an EH valve calibration using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab monitor so the UCM can relearn the neutral and end-of-stroke positions of the new sensor/valve.
