Case IH 553 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Front fueling actuator overfueling

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the actual fuel rail pressure is higher than the commanded fuel rail pressure. This condition can cause engine noise associated with high injection pressures and will typically force the engine to reduce power or derate.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for Air in Fuel: Inspect the pressure-side fuel lines for air ingress, which can cause erratic rail pressures.

  2. Measure Drain Line Restriction: Check the fuel drain line restriction. It should be less than 4.0 in Hg. High drain line restriction can cause over-pressurization.

  3. Inspect Actuator Resistance: Turn the keyswitch OFF, disconnect the front fueling actuator, and measure its resistance. If the resistance is greater than 5 ohms, the actuator has an internal electrical fault.

  4. Inspect for Mechanical Leakage: Check the fuel pump actuator for excessive mechanical leakage or a damaged inboard O-ring, which allows excess fuel to bypass and over-pressurize the rail at idle.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect batteries

Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position and disconnect the batteries (negative cable first).

  2. Locate actuator

Locate the front fueling actuator. It is mounted on the fuel delivery housing / adapter on the back of the high-pressure fuel pump.

  3. Inspect wiring

Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the actuator and inspect the pins and connectors for damage or corrosion.

  4. Remove actuator

Remove the faulty front fueling actuator and inspect the actuator bore for any defects or debris.

  5. Install new actuator

Install the new fuel pump actuator (ensure new O-rings are properly seated and lubricated).

  6. Reconnect wiring and batteries

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery cables.

  7. Validate repair

Turn the keyswitch ON, start the engine, and let it idle for at least 1 minute. The fault code status should change to INACTIVE, and the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp should turn off.

  8. Clear fault codes

Use an electronic service tool (such as Cummins INSITE or the Case IH equivalent) to clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM.

Parts you might need
