Case IH 5532-06 - BCM – BCM: Switch backlight illumination driver - short circuit to ground

The output driver that supplies power to illuminate the cab switches (when the headlights or parking lights are turned on) has detected that the circuit is shorted directly to ground, which can cause a blown fuse, disabled backlighting, or damage to the BCM driver.

   Turn on the headlights or parking lights and observe the cab switch panels to verify which backlights are failing to illuminate.

   Inspect the wiring harnesses routed to the cab switch panels, armrest (Pro 1200 display area), and the BCM for pinched wires, chafing against metal brackets, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the battery using the master disconnect switch, then disconnect the BCM harness containing the switch backlight circuit.

   Using a digital multimeter, check for continuity between the backlight circuit pin and chassis ground to confirm the short.

   If a short is present, unplug the cab rocker switches one by one. If the short disappears when a specific switch is unplugged, that switch has an internal short. If the short remains with all switches unplugged, the wiring harness itself is shorted to the chassis.

   Check the BCM pins and connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that might be bridging the backlight power pin to a ground pin.

   Park the tractor on a level surface, set the parking brake, remove the key from the ignition, and turn the battery disconnect switch to the 'OFF' position.

   Remove the interior cab trim panels necessary to access the BCM and the affected switch panels.

   If the harness is damaged: Locate the chafed or pinched wire. Cut out the damaged section, strip the ends, and repair using an OEM-approved environmental splice and heat-shrink tubing.

   Re-wrap the harness with friction tape and secure it away from sharp metal edges.

   If a switch is internally shorted: Remove the faulty rocker switch from the panel and install a new replacement switch.

   Reconnect all switch connectors and the BCM harness.

   Turn the battery disconnect switch back to the 'ON' position.

   Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Use the AFS Pro 1200 display or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 5532-06 fault code.

   Turn on the exterior lights to activate the switch backlighting. Verify that all switches illuminate properly and that the fault code does not return.
