Case IH 56 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Hitch position range to position command range ratio is not within spec during calibration.
Issue description
This code triggers during the electronic draft control (EDC) / hitch calibration process. It means the controller has detected that the ratio between the operator's input (the hitch position command potentiometer in the armrest) and the actual physical travel of the hitch (measured by the rockshaft position potentiometer) falls outside of the acceptable programmed specifications.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Magnum
- MX Magnum Series
- TG Series
Check the cause
Inspect the mechanical linkage of the rockshaft position potentiometer on the rear hitch to see if it has frozen up or slipped out of position
Ensure the hitch is completely lowered before initiating the calibration sequence, as an incorrect starting position will immediately skew the calibration ratio
Disconnect the hitch position potentiometer and test it using an ohmmeter (across terminals A and C) to verify that the resistance sweeps smoothly without dead spots as the sensor arm is moved
Test the wiring harness for continuity between the TMF controller, the armrest position command potentiometer, and the rear rockshaft potentiometer, looking for shorts to ground or open circuits
Repair steps
Adjust the Sensor Linkage
If the rockshaft potentiometer has slipped, loosen the link arm clamp bolt. Turn the potentiometer shaft manually (usually clockwise) until it registers that the hitch is fully down, then retighten the clamp.
Replace the Sensor
If the potentiometer is seized, physically broken, or fails the ohmmeter sweep test, remove the bolt-on sensor and disconnect the 3-pin connector. Install the new potentiometer and secure the mechanical linkage.
Perform Hitch Calibration
Once adjusted or replaced, you must re-run the Hitch Calibration procedure. Ensure the tractor is completely stationary and the engine is running (engine speed must often be set above 1600 RPM). Follow the on-screen or service manual prompts to cycle the hitch through its full range of motion.
