Case IH 56003 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Controller Memory Error -- Loss of Forward Gear Pre-selection information.
Issue description
This code indicates that the forward start-up gear configuration is missing or corrupted in the controller's memory. The failure mode occurs either because the forward gear pre-select was never configured in the controller, or the stored configuration has become corrupt.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH MX Magnum series
- Case IH 7220
Check the cause
Verify Voltage: Check for low battery voltage codes (such as TRANS 56022 - Battery voltage lower than 9 volts), as voltage drops can cause the controller to lose memory.
Inspect Connections: Inspect the transmission controller and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or loose connections that could interrupt power to the module's memory.
Check Configuration: Use the service tool configuration screen to verify if the stored Forward Gear Limit is invalid or blank.
Repair steps
Connect the Case IH service tool / instrumentation to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Turn the key on and access the Trans Setup Menu.
Retrieve, record, and clear any active fault codes (faults must be cleared before calibration is possible).
Navigate to the Configuration screen and input/program the correct forward start-up gear pre-selection.
Perform a full Transmission Controller Calibration.
Note: The transmission controller must be calibrated whenever the controller loses memory or is replaced.
Save the configuration and exit the select controller screen.
Restart the tractor and verify that the fault code does not return and that the tractor shifts into the pre-selected forward gear normally.
