Case IH 56004 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TECU): Measured transmission output speed does not match the commanded transmission output speed

This fault indicates that the transmission controller has detected a transmission slip. Specifically, the controller compares the measured ratio of the engine speed to the transmission output (wheel) speed against the theoretical commanded ratio. If an error (mismatch) of over 15% is detected for 5 seconds, the transmission will abort to neutral to protect the drivetrain.

   Check for accompanying codes (e.g., 5011, 5021, 56094, 56099) indicating low system pressure or an internal hydraulic leak.

   Observe symptoms: note if the tractor slows or stops moving under load (indicates hydraulic/clutch issue) or if it throws the code without slowing down (indicates sensor issue).

   Perform a transmission system pressure test to ensure pressures are in spec (e.g., around 305 psi for MX series).

   Check the transmission output speed sensor for improper adjustment, loose wiring, or failure.

   Perform a transmission calibration (Trans Cal) and clutch pedal calibration to restore pressure values or identify failing clutch packs.

   Clear fault codes

   Clear the fault codes by turning the key switch to the OFF, then ON position.

   If the code immediately returns without the tractor moving (indicating an Electronic / Sensor Failure), inspect the transmission output speed sensor and its wiring harness for shorts or breaks.

   Adjust or replace the transmission output speed sensor.

   Replace transmission controller

   If the sensor and wiring are verified good but the code persists immediately upon startup, the transmission controller itself may have failed and requires replacement.

   Identify shared clutch pack

   If the fault only occurs in specific gears (indicating a Hydraulic / Mechanical Failure), identify the shared clutch pack for those gears (e.g., the 1R, 4F, or 5F clutch packs).

   Inspect and replace solenoids

   Inspect the transmission solenoids. A sticking solenoid that mechanically fails to turn on can cause this slip. Replace the sticking solenoid.

   Rebuild clutch pack

   If a clutch pack is leaking or slipping (common in the reverse clutch on MX series), the transmission will need to be split and the clutch pack rebuilt.

   Install updated clutch drum

   Note for MX Series: If the tractor throws the code due to 'centrifugal engagement' (oil failing to bleed off behind the clutch piston), install the updated revised replacement clutch drum designed to bleed off the oil properly during the rebuild.
