Case IH 56005 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): The stored Forward Gear Limit is invalid.
Issue description
The Transmission Controller's non-volatile memory has lost, corrupted, or registered an out-of-bounds value for the parameter that dictates the tractor's maximum allowable forward gear. This is a software/configuration error rather than a mechanical failure.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH Steiger
- Case IH Magnum
Check the cause
Check battery voltage to ensure it is stable and above 9V, as voltage drops, dead batteries, or electrical spikes are the most common causes of controller memory corruption (check for related codes like TRANS 56022 or TRANS 8011)
Check for related memory faults such as TRANS 56003 (Controller Memory Error -- Loss of Forward Gear Pre-selection information) which indicate a broader memory loss in the controller
Verify tractor specifications to determine the factory-specified maximum forward gear for the specific tractor model before attempting to reprogram the module
Repair steps
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine off).
Launch the EST software and establish communication with the Transmission Controller (TRANS).
Navigate to the Service Tool Config (Configuration) screen.
Locate the parameter for the Forward Gear Limit.
Reset the value by entering the correct maximum forward gear limit for your specific tractor model.
Save the configuration to the controller.
Cycle the ignition key OFF, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back ON to verify that fault code 56005 has been successfully cleared.
