Case IH 56029 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 4R Valve Coil circuit is shorted to 12 volts when the valve is ON

When the 4R clutch solenoid coil is activated, the voltage on the low side of the coil is higher than expected. The system logs this fault code whenever the transmission is shifted into forward gears that utilize the 4R clutch (specifically gears 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16LO, or 16HI). If the issue is temperature-sensitive, it often indicates that the solenoid coil is beginning to fail.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the 4R clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for chafed wires, melted insulation, or any point where the circuit could be shorting to a 12-volt power source.

   Test the 4R clutch solenoid coil for an internal short circuit by checking for abnormal resistance or current draw.

   Check the transmission controller (often located underneath the fuse/relay panel in the cab) for internal failure if the wiring and solenoid test within normal specifications.

   Locate the Components

   Identify the 4R clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block and locate the transmission controller in the cab.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to power in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness segment.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the 4R clutch solenoid coil is internally shorted (especially if the issue is triggered by operating temperature), remove the retaining nut/clip, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install a new 4R clutch solenoid coil.

   Replace the Transmission Controller

   If both the wiring and the solenoid are in good working order, the transmission controller has failed. Remove the faulty controller, install the replacement module, and perform the required transmission calibration procedures.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Clear the fault codes from the system and test drive the tractor, shifting through the affected forward gears (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16LO, 16HI) to verify the repair.
