56030

Case IH 56030 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 5F Valve Coil circuit is shorted to 12 volts when the valve is ON

Issue description

The 5F clutch solenoid coil has been commanded ON, but the transmission controller detects that the voltage on the low side of the coil is higher than expected.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Puma series
  • MX Magnum series
  • Steiger / STX series
  • STX 325

Check the cause

  1. Replicate the fault by shifting into forward gears 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, or 11, or during a transmission valve calibration

  2. Monitor for temperature sensitivity; if the problem only occurs at operating temperature, the solenoid coil is likely failing internally

  3. Locate the transmission controller underneath the fuse/relay panel in the cab

  4. Visually inspect and use a multimeter to test the wiring harness between the 5F clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for a short to 12 volts

  5. Measure the resistance and current draw of the 5F clutch solenoid coil to verify if it is internally shorted

Repair steps

  1. Access the Components

Safely park the machine, turn off the engine, and locate the transmission control valve block (where the 5F solenoid is housed) and the transmission controller in the cab.

  2. Repair Wiring

If your multimeter tests reveal a short to 12V in the harness between the controller and the 5F solenoid, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace the Solenoid Coil

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance test (or fails when hot), remove the retaining nut on the 5F valve and replace the solenoid coil (or the entire solenoid valve assembly).

  4. Replace the Transmission Controller

If both the wiring harness and the 5F solenoid test perfectly fine, the transmission controller has failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Calibrate and Test

After repairs are made, clear the fault codes. Run a transmission valve calibration or shift through the forward gears (specifically 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11) to verify the code does not return.
