Case IH 56038 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): 4F Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when the valve is ON
Issue description
The transmission controller measures the current draw from the 4F clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw is lower than the expected limit while the 4F clutch is engaged, it triggers this code. This means either the solenoid coil itself has failed open, the wiring has failed open or short-circuited to a ground connection, or the circuit has lost its power supply.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Magnum (MX Magnum) series
- Case IH Steiger series
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller (often located underneath the fuse/relay panel in the cab) and the 4F clutch solenoid for chafing, breaks, or pinched wires.
Unplug the 4F clutch solenoid and test the coil's resistance with a multimeter to determine if the coil itself has failed open or is shorted to ground.
Check for power available from the bottom of the clutch relay. An open circuit in the solenoid power wire will also cause this code.
Note if the problem only occurs when the tractor reaches operating temperature. If the fault is temperature-sensitive, the solenoid coil is likely starting to fail internally and will need replacement.
Repair steps
Locate Components
Locate the transmission controller and the 4F clutch solenoid valve on the transmission control manifold.
Test and Repair Wiring
Disconnect the harness at both the controller and the solenoid. Perform a continuity test on the wires. If an open circuit or a short to ground is found in the harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring section.
Check the Relay
Inspect the clutch relay and its power supply wire. If no power is reaching the solenoid, replace the relay or repair the power supply wire.
Replace the Solenoid
If the wiring and relay are intact but the solenoid fails the resistance test (or fails when hot), remove the retaining hardware and replace the 4F clutch solenoid valve/coil.
Verify Repair
Clear the fault codes using an electronic service tool or the tractor's diagnostic menu. Test drive the tractor, ensuring you shift through the forward gears (1-4, 6, 8) and reverse gears (1-2) to verify the 4F clutch engages without triggering the code.
