Case IH 56039 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 4R Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is ON
Issue description
The 4R clutch solenoid coil is commanded on, but the voltage on the low side of the coil is lower than expected. This can be caused by the coil failing open, a short to ground or open circuit in the wiring, or no power available from the bottom of the clutch relay.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- STX Steiger
- STX Series
- Steiger series
- Puma series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring, terminals, and connectors between the transmission controller and the 4R clutch solenoid for pushed back pins, corrosion, or damaged wires.
Disconnect the harness and measure the resistance between the controller connector cavity for the 4R solenoid and chassis ground to check for a short to ground (there should be no continuity).
Disconnect the 4R clutch solenoid connector and measure the resistance across the solenoid coil cavities (should be approximately 9.7 to 10.7 ohms at 27°C / 80°F).
Measure the resistance of the power and ground wires from the transmission controller connector to the solenoid connector to check for an open circuit.
Repair steps
Perform diagnostic resistance checks
Perform the diagnostic resistance checks on the 4R clutch solenoid coil.
Replace the 4R clutch solenoid coil
If the resistance across the solenoid coil is higher than the specified 9.7 to 10.7 ohms, the coil has failed open. Replace the 4R clutch solenoid coil.
Repair or replace the wiring harness
If the solenoid resistance is within specification, trace the wiring harness back to the transmission controller. Repair or replace the wiring harness if an open circuit or short to ground is found.
Reconnect components and clear fault codes
If no problems are found with the coil or the wiring harness, reconnect all components and clear the fault codes.
Test drive the tractor
Turn the key switch off and then on. Start and drive the tractor, shifting through the gears to trigger the 4R clutch.
Replace the transmission controller
If fault code TRANS 56039 is recorded again after verifying the wiring and solenoid are good, the transmission controller has failed internally. Replace the transmission controller.
