Case IH 56041 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): 5R Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is ON.
Issue description
The transmission controller has commanded the 5R (5th Reverse / specific clutch range) solenoid valve to turn ON, but the system detects an abnormal electrical condition. Specifically, it senses that the circuit is either completely open (broken wire, disconnected plug, or burnt-out internal coil) or shorted directly to ground (chafed wire touching the chassis or an internal short in the solenoid).

Check the cause
Disconnect the electrical harness from the 5R clutch solenoid and measure resistance across the coil pins with a multimeter. An 'OL' reading indicates an open coil.
Check for continuity between the coil pins and the solenoid casing. Continuity indicates the coil is shorted to ground.
Inspect the wiring harness between the 5R clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for pinched wires, chafing against the housing, or melted insulation.
With both the solenoid and transmission controller disconnected, test the 5R circuit wires for end-to-end continuity and for any shorts to ground.
If the solenoid and wiring test within specification, verify the transmission controller, as its internal driver for the 5R valve may have failed.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, relieve any residual hydraulic pressure, and engage the parking brake.
Locate the transmission control valve block.
Typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing.
Identify the specific 5R clutch solenoid valve on the manifold.
Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block with brake cleaner or a degreaser.
This prevents any dirt or debris from entering the sensitive hydraulic system.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the 5R solenoid.
Remove the retaining nut, bolt, or snap ring holding the solenoid coil or cartridge valve in place.
Carefully pull the faulty solenoid valve out of the valve block.
Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean tractor transmission/hydraulic fluid.
Insert the new valve into the manifold block, ensuring it seats fully, and tighten the retaining hardware to the OEM torque specification.
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks into place.
Turn the tractor key to the ON position and use the tractor's display monitor or a diagnostic service tool to clear the TRANS 56041 fault code.
Perform a transmission clutch calibration (fill process) via the tractor's TRANS SETUP menu.
This allows the transmission controller to learn the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid valve and ensures smooth shifting.
