Case IH 56044 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 1M Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is OFF.
Issue description
The transmission controller has commanded the 1M clutch solenoid coil to turn OFF, but the voltage on the low side of the coil is reading lower than expected. The controller measures the current draw from the 1M clutch solenoid circuit; if the draw is below the acceptable limit, it flags the circuit as open or shorted to ground.

4 machines- STX Steiger
- STX 325
- Steiger 435
- Puma Series
Check the cause
Note if the code only appears when the tractor is hot (temperature sensitivity indicates the solenoid coil is likely starting to fail internally).
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the 1M clutch solenoid on the transmission valve body for rubbed, pinched, or melted wires.
Test the neutral latch relay to ensure it is sending power to the solenoid power wire.
Disconnect the 1M solenoid and measure the resistance across the coil pins with a multimeter to see if it has failed open.
Check the harness side for continuity to the transmission controller and ensure there is no continuity to ground (which would indicate a short).
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the specific solenoid labeled or mapped as '1M'.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic tests revealed a short to ground or an open wire in the harness between the controller and the solenoid, repair the damaged wire or replace that section of the harness.
Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the wiring is intact but the coil tested open or fails when hot, remove the retaining nut/clip holding the 1M solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off and install the new OEM replacement coil.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid, ensuring the weather seal is intact. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Access the 'Trans Setup' menu on the tractor's display. Retrieve, record, and clear the fault codes. You may need to perform a transmission calibration procedure (filling the clutches) to ensure the new solenoid engages smoothly.
