56046

Case IH 56046 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 2F Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is OFF

Issue description

The transmission controller detects that the 2F clutch solenoid coil is turned off, but the voltage on the low side of the coil is lower than expected. This can be caused by a failed open coil, wiring shorted to ground or open, no power from the neutral latch relay, or a failed transmission controller.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH STX Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the 2F solenoid for abnormal routing, wire damage, or chafing (especially rubbing against hydraulic pipes).

  2. Disconnect the transmission controller connectors (C026 and C027) and the solenoid connector to inspect terminals and wires for corrosion or pushed pins.

  3. Verify the ground connections for the solenoids are clean and have not been painted over or corroded.

  4. Note if the problem is temperature-sensitive; if the issue fluctuates with tractor temperature and wiring is intact, the solenoid coil is likely failing internally.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Transmission Control Valve

Locate the transmission control valve block where the clutch solenoids are mounted.

  2. Repair Wiring

If chafing or a short to ground was found during the diagnostic phase, repair the damaged section of the wire. If the harness is inaccessible or heavily damaged, replace the transmission wire harness and route it carefully to avoid rubbing against hydraulic lines.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring, relays, and grounds test good, the 2F clutch solenoid has failed open. Remove the retaining hardware for the 2F solenoid and pull the cartridge/coil assembly from the manifold. Install the new solenoid and torque to OEM specifications.

  4. Clear Codes

Power on the tractor and use the Trans Setup menu or an Electronic Service Tool to retrieve and clear the fault codes from the Transmission Controller. The codes must be cleared before calibration is possible.

  5. Recalibrate Transmission

Perform a transmission calibration procedure to ensure the controller learns the fill times and engagement points for the new 2F clutch solenoid.
