56048

Case IH 56048 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 4F Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is OFF.

Issue description

This fault code is recorded if the problem occurs while the 4F clutch is not engaged (turned off). The transmission controller measures the current draw from the 4F clutch solenoid circuit; if the voltage on the low side of the coil is lower than expected, it indicates that the circuit is open or shorted to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Locate the transmission controller underneath the fuse/relay panel in the cab.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the 4F solenoid for abnormal routing, chafing, or physical wire damage.

  3. Disconnect connectors C026 and C027. Verify that the connectors were fully and properly installed. Inspect the pins, terminals, and wires inside the connectors for corrosion, push-outs, or damage.

  4. Use a multimeter to determine whether the specific problem is a short to ground or an open circuit in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Codes

Before beginning calibration or testing, retrieve, record, and clear any existing fault codes.

  2. Test the Harness

Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the wire between the transmission controller and the 4F clutch solenoid. If the wire is broken (open) or shorted to the chassis (ground), repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Test the Relay

Check for 12V power at the bottom of the clutch relay to ensure power is being supplied to the solenoid power wire. If no power is present, trace the power supply circuit and replace the relay if necessary.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring harness and relay power are intact, the 4F clutch solenoid coil has failed open and must be replaced.

  5. Recalibrate

After repairing the wiring or replacing the solenoid, you must enter the "Trans Setup" menu on the display and perform a transmission calibration to ensure the inching pedal and clutch engagement are within a valid range.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • 4F Clutch Solenoid Valve / Transmission Solenoid Coil

Specific OEM part numbers vary by exact model (Puma vs. Steiger). Source a 'Transmission Clutch Solenoid' specific to your machine's serial number from a Case IH dealer.
