56049

Case IH 56049 – Transmission Controller (TCU / Transmission ECU): 4R Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is OFF.

Issue description

The transmission controller monitors the voltage and current draw on the 4R clutch solenoid circuit. If the voltage or current is lower than the expected limit while the valve is commanded OFF, the controller determines that the circuit has lost its power supply, has a broken wire (open circuit), or is shorting directly to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Puma series (150, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, etc.)
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Maxxum (MXM)

Check the cause

  1. Note when the code occurs. If the fault code is recorded primarily when the tractor is hot, the 4R solenoid coil itself is likely starting to fail internally.

  2. Locate the transmission controller (often underneath the fuse/relay panel in the cab) and trace the wiring harness down to the 4R solenoid on the transmission valve block. Check for abnormal routing, chafing, or visible wire damage.

  3. Disconnect the main transmission harness connectors (e.g., C026 and C027). Inspect the pins and terminals for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture. Verify they are fully seated when reinstalled.

  4. Verify that power is available from the bottom latch relay, as an open circuit in the main solenoid power wire can also trigger this code.

  5. Use a multimeter to test the specific wire between the 4R clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for continuity (to rule out an open circuit) and check for continuity to ground (to rule out a short).

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the circuit

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the solenoid

Locate the 4R transmission solenoid valve on the transmission control valve manifold.

  3. Test the solenoid coil

Unplug the connector directly at the 4R solenoid. Measure the resistance across the solenoid pins. If the coil reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or is shorted out, the solenoid is the culprit.

  4. Replace the solenoid

If the wiring harness tests good but the solenoid fails the resistance test (or fails when hot), remove the retaining bolt/nut holding the 4R solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off and install the replacement.

  5. Repair wiring (If Applicable)

If the solenoid tests fine but the harness failed the continuity test in the diagnostic phase, locate the break or short in the harness and splice in a repair wire using weather-sealed connectors.

  6. Reassemble and clear codes

Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display to clear the TRANS 56049 code.

  7. Test drive

Operate the tractor and shift through the gears to engage the 4R clutch. Verify that the code does not return.
