Case IH 56050 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): 5F Valve Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when valve is OFF.
Issue description
The transmission controller measures the voltage and current draw on the 5F clutch solenoid circuit. When the 5F clutch solenoid is commanded OFF, the controller detects that the voltage/current draw is lower than expected. This means the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply from the neutral latch relay.

Check the cause
Check if the problem is temperature-sensitive (occurs only at operating temperature), which indicates an internally failing solenoid coil
Perform a coil resistance test on the 5F clutch solenoid (expected values range from 9.4 ohms at 40°F to 14.3 ohms at 140°F)
Inspect the wiring harness between the 5F clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for open circuits or shorts to ground
Verify that power is available from the neutral latch relay, as an open circuit in the solenoid power wire will trigger this code
Repair steps
Disconnect the Solenoid
Locate the 5F clutch solenoid on the transmission regulator valve assembly and disconnect its electrical connector.
Test the Coil
Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil. If the resistance is lower than the specified range (indicating a short) or shows no continuity (indicating an open circuit), replace the 5F solenoid coil.
Test the Wiring
If the coil resistance is within specification, leave the connector unplugged and turn the key switch ON. Check for voltage at the connector to ensure power is being supplied. Inspect the harness running to the transmission controller for chafing, pinched wires, or damaged pins. Repair or replace the wiring harness as necessary.
Replace the Controller (Last Resort)
If the solenoid coil tests good and the wiring harness has no faults, the transmission controller itself has likely failed and must be replaced.
Recalibrate
After replacing the solenoid, repairing the wiring, or replacing the controller, clear the fault codes and perform a transmission controller calibration.
