Case IH 56051 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): 5R Valve Coil circuit (Reverse Gear Clutch Solenoid) is open or shorted to ground when the valve is OFF

The transmission controller continuously measures the current draw from the 5R clutch solenoid circuit. When the 5R clutch solenoid coil is commanded OFF, the voltage on the low side of the coil is lower than expected, or the current draw falls below the acceptable limit, triggering this code.

   Inspect the wiring harness running between the transmission controller and the 5R clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block for chafing, pinched wires, or disconnected plugs.

   Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the 5R clutch solenoid coil. An open (infinite resistance) or short to ground indicates a faulty coil.

   Test the neutral latch relay to ensure it is sending power to the solenoid power wire.

   Check the continuity of the wire between the 5R clutch solenoid and the transmission controller to rule out a break in the harness.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Access the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission control valve block where the 5R (Reverse) clutch solenoid is mounted.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or a short to ground in the harness between the TCU and the solenoid, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the connector pigtail.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the 5R solenoid coil failed the resistance test (failed open), remove the retaining nut/bolt, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install the new replacement solenoid coil.

   Replace the Relay

   If the neutral latch relay is not providing power, replace the relay in the cab fuse/relay panel.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key on. Access the "Trans Setup" menu on the display to retrieve and clear the fault codes. Once the code is cleared, you must perform a transmission valve calibration to ensure the new solenoid engages the clutch at the correct pressure.
