56064

Case IH 56064 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): The Neutral Lever Switch and either the Forward or Reverse Lever Switch are both turned on.

Issue description

This code is generated when the system detects that the neutral switch and either the forward or reverse switch are in the 'ON' position at the exact same time.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Puma series
  • MX Magnum series
  • Steiger series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the physical operation of the shuttle lever to ensure it is not physically sticking and activating multiple microswitches simultaneously.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the forward/reverse/neutral lever switches to the Transmission Controller for chafing, pinched wires, or shorts that could cause multiple circuits to read 'ON'.

  3. Disconnect the shuttle lever switch assembly and use a multimeter to test the continuity of the Neutral, Forward, and Reverse switches independently to ensure they open and close correctly and are not internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery

to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Remove the steering column or console trim panels

required to access the forward/reverse shuttle lever assembly and its wiring connections.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector

for the shuttle lever switch assembly.

  4. Remove the mounting hardware securing the faulty switch or the entire combined shuttle switch assembly

If the diagnostic continuity test revealed an internally shorted switch (e.g., the neutral switch remains closed even when the lever is in forward/reverse).

  5. Install the new switch assembly

and secure it with the OEM retaining hardware.

  6. Repair the shorted section of the wiring harness or replace the harness section

If the switches tested fine but the wiring was damaged.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness, reassemble the console trim, and reconnect the battery

  8. Turn the key on, clear the stored transmission fault codes, and cycle the shuttle lever through Forward, Neutral, and Reverse

to verify the code 56064 does not return.
