Case IH 56073 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Unwanted Power to 4F/4R Valves due to short to 12 volts
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting 12-volt power at the 4F/4R transmission solenoid valves or BOC valves at a time when they should be de-energized, which is almost always caused by a short-to-power in the wiring harness.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH MX Magnum
Check the cause
Check for cascading codes: if TRANS 56073 occurs alongside TRANS 56016 (Inching pedal position potentiometer or wiring failure), you MUST troubleshoot TRANS 56073 first.
Inspect the inching pedal, its position potentiometer, and the BOC switch assembly to ensure proper and tight mechanical installation.
Probe the wiring harness leading to the 4F/4R valves and the BOC valve group to locate any short to 12 volts.
Check for unexpected voltage on the output of the Transmission Neutral Latch Relay, as a fused or stuck relay can send unwanted power to the valves.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect battery power to safely work on the transmission wiring.
Inspect and Repair Wiring
Trace the wiring harness from the Transmission Controller to the 4F/4R transmission solenoid valves and the BOC valve group. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that is allowing the valve power wire to short against a 12V source. Repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.
Verify Pedal Components
If the inching pedal, position potentiometer, or BOC switch assembly have been newly installed, incorrectly installed, or have vibrated loose, remount and tighten them to factory specifications.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery and turn the key on. You must retrieve, record, and clear the fault codes from the Transmission Controller. The manual explicitly states that errors must be cleared before calibration is possible.
Recalibrate the Transmission
Enter the "Trans Setup Menu" on the display. Ensure the inching pedal is reading in a valid range, and perform a full transmission controller calibration to relearn the clutch engagement values.
