Case IH 56088 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Trans Neutral Latch Relay Coil circuit is open or shorted to ground when commanded ON

The transmission neutral latch relay controls the power supply to the lockup valve group and neutral relay. The transmission controller monitors the status of this relay using the switch common (lockup common) output. When the controller commands the relay to turn on but detects an open circuit or a short to ground, it logs fault code 56088.

   Monitor Relay Function via Display: Turn the key switch to the ON position and enter TRANS VIEW on the instrumentation controller. Navigate to SW #2. With the transmission control lever in the PARK position, the display should read 1 0 0 (1) 0 1 0 0. Monitor the lockup common status (the digit in parentheses) to see if the controller is recognizing the relay's state.

   Relay Swap Test: Locate the Transmission Neutral Latch Relay in the fuse/relay panel (frequently designated as Relay #17 on STX models). Swap it with a known good relay of the identical type from another circuit. If the fault clears or changes to a different code, the relay is the culprit.

   Wiring & Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the neutral latch relay, the neutral relay, and the transmission controller. A known issue on STX models involves a loose wire pin in the main cab harness connection located at the floor on the back right side of the cab.

   Park the machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn the key switch to the OFF position.

   Access the fuse and relay panel

   Access the main fuse and relay panel inside the cab.

   Identify the relay

   Identify the Transmission Neutral Latch Relay (check the panel decal, often Relay #17).

   Inspect the relay socket

   Remove the relay and inspect the socket terminals. Look for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or signs of arcing.

   Inspect the wiring harness

   Inspect the wiring harness leading from the relay panel to the transmission controller. Pay special attention to the floor connector on the back right of the cab, ensuring all pins are seated tightly and locked into the connector body.

   Repair wiring or repin connector

   If a wiring fault (open wire or short to ground) is found, repair the damaged wire or repin the connector.

   Replace the relay

   If the wiring and connections are intact, replace the faulty Transmission Neutral Latch Relay with a new OEM relay.

   Test the transmission

   Turn the key switch ON, clear the stored fault codes in the Transmission Controller, and test the transmission by shifting through the gears to verify the repair.
