Case IH 56096 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Calibration System Pressure Slope is Out of Range

Issue description

This code indicates that the slope of the transmission system pressure curve is outside of the expected range. The transmission controller determines the slope of the transmission pressure control curve during the "CAL PRESSURE" calibration process. If the resulting pressure does not fall within the expected parameters, this fault is triggered.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Magnum series

Check the cause

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: Verify the transmission oil level. If it is low, fill it to the proper level before proceeding.

  2. Clear Existing Codes: Retrieve, record, and clear any existing fault codes. Previous codes must be cleared before a successful calibration is possible.

  3. Check Inching Pedal: Ensure the inching pedal is in a valid range, as an out-of-range pedal can abort or skew calibration.

  4. Inspect the Sensor: Check the system pressure sensor and its wiring for damage, shorts, or loose connections.

  5. Inspect the Solenoid: Check the system pressure solenoid coil and its circuit for failures.

  6. Inspect the Valve: Check the system pressure valve for a sticking solenoid core or a sticking system pressure spool.

  7. Inspect the Spring: Check the system pressure valve spring for fatigue or breakage.

Repair steps

  1. Fluid Verification

Ensure the transmission oil is at the correct level and at the proper operating temperature for calibration.

  2. Component Testing & Replacement

Test the system pressure sensor and system pressure solenoid coil using a multimeter to ensure they are receiving proper voltage and have continuity. Replace if they test out of specification. Remove the system pressure valve assembly from the transmission valve body. Inspect the valve spool and solenoid core for scoring, debris, or sticking. Clean the valve body channels. Inspect the valve spring. If the spring is broken or collapsed, replace it.

  3. Reassembly

Reinstall the cleaned or new valve, spring, solenoid, and sensor. Ensure all electrical connections are secure.

  4. Clear Faults

Enter the tractor's diagnostic menu (TRANS SETUP) and clear the 56096 fault code.

  5. Recalibrate

Perform the Transmission Controller Calibration (CAL PRESSURE). The controller will command the valve to specific pressures (e.g., 1500 kPa and 1000 kPa) to rebuild the pressure curve. The calibration must complete successfully without throwing the out-of-range error.
