Case IH 56111 – Transmission Controller: Trans Controller Failure — Internal Short in the 1F Valve Coil Circuit
Issue description
The transmission controller has commanded the 1F valve coil driver to turn OFF, but the controller is still sensing electrical current flowing through the driver. This indicates an internal short circuit within the controller's driver circuit for the 1F (1st Forward) clutch solenoid valve.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH Puma Series (140, 155, 165, 180, 195, 210, 240)
- Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac Series
- Case IH MX Magnum Series
Check the cause
Clear and Verify: Retrieve, record, and clear the fault codes via the display monitor. Cycle the key and operate the transmission to see if TRANS 56111 returns as an active fault.
Inspect the 1F Solenoid: Test the 1F clutch solenoid coil for an internal short. If the coil resistance is too low, it can draw excessive current and damage the new controller.
Check the Wiring Harness: Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the 1F clutch solenoid. Look for wires that are rubbed bare and shorting to a 12V power source or ground.
Check Relays: Verify the neutral latch relay and valve supply power circuits are functioning correctly and not supplying voltage when they shouldn't be.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Controller
Locate the Transmission Controller (location varies by model; often found in the right-hand console of the cab or mounted externally near the transmission housing).
Remove the Old Module
Carefully disconnect the multi-pin wiring harness connectors from the controller. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the failed module.
Install the New Module
Mount the replacement transmission controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.
Restore Power
Reconnect the battery.
Transmission Calibration
Enter the "TRANS SETUP" menu on the tractor's display (typically accessed by holding the PROG and DECR keys). Follow the on-screen prompts to run the automated valve calibration process, ensuring the inching pedal and fluid temperatures are within valid ranges. Once the fill process finishes, press PROG to exit and save.
