56118

Case IH 56118 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Trans Controller Failure -- Internal short in the 5F Valve Coil circuit.

Issue description

The transmission controller has commanded the 5F valve coil driver to the "OFF" state, but the controller is still sensing current flowing through the driver circuit. This indicates an internal failure within the transmission controller itself, specifically that the 5F valve coil driver has failed or shorted internally.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Puma
  • Magnum (MX series)
  • Steiger
  • TJ Series (TJ275, TJ325, TJ375, TJ425)
  • MX215
  • Quadtrac 500
  • Case CE Backhoes (580/590 Series)

Check the cause

  1. Retrieve and record codes from the cab display to verify if 56118 is active or stored

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the 5F clutch solenoid and the transmission controller for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a short to power/ground that could be back-feeding voltage

  3. Test the 5F clutch solenoid coil for an internal short or improper resistance

  4. If the wiring harness and the 5F solenoid coil test within normal specifications, confirm the fault is an internal failure of the transmission controller's 5F driver

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical arcing or further module damage.

  2. Remove the Faulty Module

Locate the transmission controller (location varies by model, often found in the cab console or under the right-hand control armrest) and carefully disconnect the multi-pin wiring harnesses.

  3. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement transmission controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  4. Power Up and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the old fault codes from the system memory.

  5. Perform Transmission Calibration

Enter the TRANS SETUP menu on the display using the PROG and DECR keys. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the inching pedal, then complete the clutch fill calibration process by shifting to neutral and increasing engine speed to around 2000 RPM while the controller learns the clutch engagement points.
