Case IH 56123 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Engine Torque Signal Failed in the Engine Controller or Communication Lost With the Engine Controller
Issue description
The Tractor Data Bus (TDB) has signaled to the transmission that the engine torque data is either in error or completely unavailable from the engine controller. The primary failure mode is that the engine torque sensing has failed internally within the engine controller, or the communication line between the modules is compromised.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH TJ Series (TJ275, TJ325, TJ375, TJ425, TJ450)
- Case IH MX Magnum
- Case IH Steiger
- Case IH Puma
Check the cause
Check for Engine Codes: Connect a diagnostic service tool and check for active fault codes in the Engine Controller (ENG). Any engine torque sensing errors must be addressed first.
Inspect the Tractor Data Bus (TDB): Check the data bus wiring and connectors between the Engine Controller and the Transmission Controller. Look for loose connections, corrosion, or damaged pins that could interrupt the signal.
Verify Controller Status: Ensure both the transmission controller and engine controller are powering up and communicating on the network properly.
Repair steps
Retrieve and Clear Codes
Enter the diagnostic menu (often done by holding the PROG key on the instrument cluster during startup) to retrieve all codes across all modules. Clear the codes to see if TRANS 56123 returns actively.
Troubleshoot Engine Sensors
Refer to the specific engine diagnosing procedures for the tractor model. If the engine controller has a failed torque sensor or internal sensing failure, follow the OEM pinpoint test for that specific engine component.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic tool cannot communicate with the engine controller, or if data bus faults are present, repair the CAN/Tractor Data Bus wiring harness between the modules.
Recalibrate
If any controllers (Engine or Transmission) are replaced or flashed during the repair, you must perform the Transmission Controller Configuration and Calibration procedures to ensure the modules recognize each other on the data bus.
