Case IH 564-06 - DEC – Transmission Controller (TCM), PTO Controller, or Armrest Control Module (ACM): Mechanical front drive (MFD) clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault current above normal

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical current draw in the MFD clutch solenoid circuit that exceeds the normal operating range. This typically points to a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself. The controller may disable the circuit to protect the module, causing the MFD to default to the engaged (ON) position.

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage is sufficient (above 11.5V), as low voltage can cause erratic solenoid operation and false codes.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the transmission/PTO controller to the MFD solenoid. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points causing a short to ground against the tractor chassis.

  3. Disconnect the MFD solenoid connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the MFD solenoid coil pins. If the resistance is significantly lower than the OEM specification (indicating an internal short), the solenoid must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the MFD solenoid valve. On many Case IH models, it is mounted externally on top of the range transmission or on the front coil of the range powershift manifold.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the MFD solenoid.

  4. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors.

  5. Replace Solenoid

    If the coil tested as internally shorted, remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off and install the new OEM replacement coil. Secure the retaining nut.

  6. Reassemble

    Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid.

  7. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and cycle the MFD switch to verify proper engagement and disengagement.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use the instrument cluster display or a diagnostic service tool to clear the stored 564-06 fault code.
