Case IH 564-16 - DEC – DEC: Mechanical front drive clutch solenoid electrical circuit fault voltage high
Issue description
The controller has detected an abnormally high voltage in the electrical circuit responsible for operating the Mechanical Front Wheel Drive (MFWD) clutch solenoid. This typically points to a short to power in the wiring harness or an open circuit (such as a broken wire or a burned-out solenoid coil) that prevents the voltage from dropping across the load.

Check the cause
Verify default mechanical state by disconnecting wires from the MFWD solenoid to ensure it mechanically engages (rules out internal clutch pack failure)
Trace the wiring harness from the DEC module to the MFWD solenoid, looking for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or shorts to a 12V power source
Unplug the MFWD solenoid connector and inspect pins for corrosion, water ingress, or pushed-back terminals
Perform a coil resistance test using a digital multimeter across the MFWD solenoid coil pins (an 'OL' reading indicates a broken internal coil)
Perform a voltage supply test with the key ON and MFWD switch toggled to disengage to ensure the DEC module is sending the correct 12V signal
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent accidental short circuits while working on the DEC harness.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the MFWD clutch solenoid valve, typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing or on the main hydraulic valve stack.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power or a broken wire in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section according to OEM wiring repair standards.
Replace the Solenoid Coil
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid, remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid stem, slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge, slide the new coil onto the stem and torque the retaining nut to spec.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the battery switch back on. Clear the inactive fault codes using the tractor's ICU display or via the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and toggle the MFWD switch. Listen for the solenoid 'click' and verify that the front wheels disengage properly.
