Case IH 5657-02 - VCM – VCM: Engine anti-tamper checksum disagreement with engine controller
Issue description
This is a software security and emissions-protection fault. The Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and the Engine Controller (ECU/EDC) continuously exchange checksums over the CAN bus to verify the integrity of the engine software. If the checksums do not match (indicating altered software such as 'chipping' or emissions deletes), the VCM logs code 5657-02 and the machine will typically be disabled or severely de-rated.

Check the cause
Interview the Operator/Owner: Determine if the tractor was recently 'tuned,' if an emissions delete was attempted, or if any aftermarket performance modules were installed.
Controller History: Check if either the Engine ECU or the VCM was recently replaced or flashed.
CAN Bus Communication: Verify that the CAN bus wiring between the VCM and the Engine ECU is intact.
Software Verification: Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) and verify the software versions and part numbers on both the VCM and the Engine ECU.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH EST to the machine's diagnostic port.
Restore Factory Software
If the engine ECU was flashed with aftermarket/delete software, you must use the CNH EST to flash the Engine Controller back to the official OEM factory dataset.
Perform Engine Dataset Registration
If the software is factory-original or was just re-flashed, navigate to the programming/calibration menu in the EST and perform an 'Engine Dataset Registration'. This procedure forces the VCM and the Engine ECU to handshake and sync their anti-tamper checksums.
Verify Controller Programming
If a controller was recently replaced, ensure it was programmed using the correct CNH Base EST software and that the controller ID information matches the machine.
Clear Codes
Once the dataset registration is complete, clear the fault codes in the VCM and Engine ECU.
Test Run
Cycle the key, start the engine, and allow it to run for several minutes. The anti-tamper detection can take a few minutes to run its background checks. Verify that code 5657-02 does not return and that the machine has full power.
