Case IH 57 – Transmission ECM: REVERSE_SW_HI_ERR (61 Auto None)

Issue description

Power Shuttle FNR (Forward-Neutral-Reverse) Lever Reverse Position Switch is shorted to 5 or 12 volts. The system logs this error when the ECM detects that the voltage is abnormally high—specifically, above 4.2 volts at ECM connector 2, pin 27.

Applies to these machines

  • JXC
  • TN60A
  • TN70A
  • TN75A
  • TN85A
  • TN95A
  • TNDA
  • TNSA
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285
  • Maxxum Series
  • MXU Series
  • Quantum series
  • JX series
  • Maxxum (100-140)
  • MXU Pro
  • Maxxum (5120-5150)
  • MX series (MX100-MX135)

Check the cause

  1. Probe ECM connector 2, pin 27 to verify if the voltage is reading above 4.2 volts

  2. Check the circuit between ECM connector 2, pin 20 and the Power Shuttle FNR Lever Reverse Position Switch for any areas where the wire may be shorted to a 12-volt source

  3. Disconnect the FNR switch and test across the switch terminals for an internal short to 5V

  4. Test the wiring harness between the FNR Lever Reverse Position Switch and ECM connector 2 for any shorts to 5V or 12V

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during testing and repair.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the steering column console wrapper/shroud to access the FNR lever switch assembly, which is mounted on the left side of the steering column.

  3. Inspect the Connector

Disconnect the multi-pin sealed connector plug for the FNR switch. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bridging that could cause a voltage short.

  4. Test/Repair Wiring

If the switch tests fine internally, trace the heavy-insulated multi-wire pigtail harness back to the Transmission ECM. Repair any chafed, pinched, or melted wires causing the short to 5V/12V.

  5. Replace the Switch

If the diagnostic checks reveal an internal short within the FNR switch itself, unbolt the faulty lever assembly from the steering column and install a new OEM switch.

  6. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the wiring harness, reinstall the steering column shrouds, reconnect the battery, and cycle the FNR lever through Forward, Neutral, and Reverse to ensure the transmission engages properly and the code is cleared.
