Case IH 57 – Transmission / Power Shuttle ECM, Electronic Draft Control (EDC) Module, or Autopilot / Steering System: FNR Lever Reverse Switch Short, EDC Microprocessor Failure, or Steering Angle Out of Bounds

Issue description

Depending on the specific control module logging the code, this indicates a Power Shuttle FNR lever reverse position switch short to 5 or 12 volts, an internal fatal error within the EDC module's logic board, or the steering sensor reading outside of its calibrated parameters.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Maxxum
  • Case IH MXM Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH / New Holland TN Series Tractors
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)

Check the cause

  1. For Transmission FNR Lever Code: Access the Transmission ECM and locate Connector 2.

  2. For Transmission FNR Lever Code: Use a multimeter to check the voltage at ECM connector 2, pin 27. The fault triggers if voltage is above 4.2 volts.

  3. For Transmission FNR Lever Code: Inspect the wiring harness for a short to 12 volts between ECM connector 2, pin 20 and the Power Shuttle FNR Lever Reverse Position Switch.

  4. For Transmission FNR Lever Code: Check for a short to 5V across the switch terminals themselves.

  5. For Transmission FNR Lever Code: Check for a short to 5V or 12V between the PS FNR Lever Reverse Position Switch and ECM connector 2.

  6. For EDC Code 57 (Microprocessor Failure): Verify stable battery and alternator voltage, as voltage spikes can cause false microprocessor faults.

  7. For EDC Code 57 (Microprocessor Failure): If voltage is stable and the code persists after a key cycle, the module has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

For Transmission FNR Switch Short: Disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Isolate wiring harness

For Transmission FNR Switch Short: Isolate the section of the wiring harness between the FNR lever and the Transmission ECM.

  3. Repair wiring

For Transmission FNR Switch Short: Repair any chafed or melted wires causing the short to 5V/12V.

  4. Replace FNR lever assembly

For Transmission FNR Switch Short: If the wiring tests good but the short is present across the switch terminals, remove the steering column trim and replace the FNR (Forward/Neutral/Reverse) lever assembly.

  5. Verify repair

For Transmission FNR Switch Short: Reconnect the battery, cycle the key, and verify the shuttle shifts into reverse without triggering the alarm/code.

  6. Disconnect battery

For EDC Microprocessor Failure: Disconnect the battery.

  7. Remove EDC module

For EDC Microprocessor Failure: Remove the faulty EDC control module.

  8. Install replacement EDC module

For EDC Microprocessor Failure: Install a replacement EDC module.

  9. Perform calibration

For EDC Microprocessor Failure: Perform the self-configuration/calibration routine (the ECM conducts a self-configuration at the next start-up when a different ECM is installed).
