Case IH 581 – Engine Controller (ENG) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel inlet Pressure Sensor voltage is too high.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel inlet pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum normal operating range. This condition is most often caused by an open ground circuit in the sensor wiring, a signal wire that has shorted to a higher voltage source, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the fuel inlet pressure sensor, its electrical connector, and the wiring harness leading back to the ECM for chafed wires, corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a digital multimeter to check the ground pin on the harness side for continuity to the chassis/ECM ground (an open ground causes signal voltage to float high).

  3. With the key ON (engine off) and sensor disconnected, probe the signal wire to ensure it is not shorted to the 5V reference wire or the 12V battery supply.

  4. Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage from the ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and engage the master battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the fuel inlet pressure sensor on the engine's fuel delivery manifold/filter housing.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed an open ground or shorted wire, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the connector pigtail.

  5. Sensor Replacement

    If the wiring tests good, the sensor itself has failed internally. Unscrew the faulty fuel inlet pressure sensor.

  6. Installation

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port. Tighten to the engine manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can damage the sensor diaphragm).

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness until the locking tab clicks.

  8. Clear Codes

    Turn the battery disconnect back on. Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the ENG 581 fault code from the ECM.

  9. Verification

    Start the engine and verify that the fault code does not return and that the fuel pressure readings on the diagnostic tool are within normal operating parameters.
