Case IH 59 – Transmission ECM / Transmission Controller: Power Shuttle FNR Lever Position Switches Disagreement

Issue description

The system detects an invalid state where either two position switches (e.g., Forward and Neutral, Reverse and Neutral, or Forward and Reverse) are activated at the exact same time, or none of the switches are activated. This is typically caused by a sticking position switch inside the shuttle lever assembly or a shorted F/N/R lever.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the shuttle lever back and forth between forward and reverse several times to free up a physically sticking switch inside the lever housing.

  2. Observe the transmission status light on the dash and count the flashes to confirm the specific error sequence.

  3. Check the forward and reverse solenoids on the transmission. Verify proper voltage and check resistance (should measure around 9 ohms). Temporarily swap the plugs on the forward and reverse solenoids to see if the directional problem moves, ruling out the solenoids vs. the switch.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness at the shuttle lever and the relays in the right-hand dash for loose connections, backed-out relays, or shorts.

Repair steps

  1. Remove steering wheel

Remove the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column.

  2. Remove covers

Take off the steering column covers/shrouds.

  3. Disconnect wiring

Locate the gear selector/shuttle lever assembly and disconnect its electrical wiring harness.

  4. Remove assembly

Unbolt and remove the faulty gear selector assembly from the steering column.

  5. Install new switch

Install the new shuttle lever switch assembly and secure it in place.

  6. Reconnect wiring

Reconnect the wiring harness to the new switch.

  7. Reinstall covers and wheel

Reinstall the steering column covers and the steering wheel.

  8. Test tractor

Test the tractor by shifting between Forward, Neutral, and Reverse to ensure the fault code is cleared and the transmission engages properly.
