5913-16 - DEC

Case IH 5913-16 - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Instrument Controller (INST): Transmission Oil Temperature 2 - Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range

Issue description

The sensor is working correctly and sending valid data, but the transmission fluid is actively overheating and has exceeded the normal operating temperature threshold.

Applies to these machines

Check the cause

  1. Check the transmission oil cooler for blockages caused by dust, dirt, or chaff (most common cause during heavy draft work)

  2. Verify the transmission oil level is not critically low, which reduces the system's ability to dissipate heat

  3. Check for accompanying hydrostatic pressure faults (such as SPN 3843) which indicate wear in the pump/motor, a failing charge pump, or contaminated oil

  4. Verify sensor accuracy — if the transmission is cold but the sensor reports a high temperature, the sensor itself may be skewed

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Cooling Package

Park the machine, turn off the engine, and thoroughly blow out the transmission oil cooler and radiator fins with compressed air to remove all chaff and debris.

  2. Correct Fluid Levels

Top off the transmission fluid to the OEM specified level. If the fluid smells burnt or is heavily contaminated from the overheating event, drain the transmission sump and replace the fluid and filters.

  3. Replace the Sensor

If the sensor is skewed/faulty: Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission case. Disconnect the electrical connector, unscrew the sensor from the housing (have a catch pan ready for minor fluid loss), install the new OEM sensor, tighten to specification, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  4. Clear Codes

Turn the key to the ON position and use the AFS Pro display (Settings > Tractor > Diagnostic Trouble Codes) to verify the code has moved from 'Active' to 'Stored', then clear the fault.
