Case IH 5949-06 - VCM – VCM: Oil cooler bypass solenoid current high
Issue description
The control module has detected an excessive electrical current draw (amperage) on the circuit that controls the oil cooler bypass solenoid. This means there is likely a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted internal solenoid coil, or a failed driver inside the control module.

Check the cause
Inspect the oil cooler bypass solenoid 2-pole female connector (X-377) for melted plastic, water intrusion, or bare wires touching the chassis.
Disconnect connector X-377 and use a multimeter to measure the resistance (ohms) across the two pins on the solenoid itself. A reading of 0 ohms or significantly below OEM spec indicates a dead short inside the coil.
With the solenoid disconnected, test the wiring harness from the X-377 connector back to the VCM for continuity to ground to check for shorts.
Inspect the cab-to-chassis harness multipole connector (X-060) to ensure there are no bent pins, corrosion, or moisture bridging the terminals.
Repair steps
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery
This prevents further electrical damage to the VCM.
Locate the oil cooler bypass solenoid
It is located on the hydraulic/transmission valve block.
Disconnect the X-377 electrical connector
Disconnect it from the solenoid.
Remove the shorted solenoid coil
If the diagnostic tests proved the solenoid coil is shorted, remove the retaining nut holding the coil to the valve stem and slide the old coil off (or unscrew the entire cartridge valve if it is a one-piece assembly).
Install the new oil cooler bypass solenoid/coil
Torque to OEM specifications.
Replace the X-377 connector if damaged
If the X-377 connector is melted or damaged due to the high current draw, cut the old connector off and splice in a new replacement pigtail using weather-sealed crimp connectors.
Reconnect the X-377 connector
Reconnect it to the solenoid.
Clear fault codes and verify repair
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the cab display or a diagnostic tool to clear the VCM fault codes. Run the tractor to verify the code does not return.
