Case IH 595 – ENGINE (ENG): Turbo overspeed protection fault

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the turbocharger turbine is spinning at a speed that exceeds its maximum safe operational limit. When this occurs, the ECM typically initiates a protection shutdown or engine derate to prevent catastrophic damage to the turbocharger and the engine.

   Monitor turbocharger speed sensor readings under load using a diagnostic tool (e.g., Case IH EST or Cummins INSITE) for erratic flickering or sudden impossible spikes (e.g., jumping instantly to 150,000+ RPM).

   Inspect the turbo speed sensor wiring harness and ECM connectors for broken wires, chafing, or corrosion.

   Check for pre-turbo exhaust leaks or intake/boost leaks, which can cause the turbocharger to over-compensate and over-spool.

   Inspect the turbocharger turbine for excess shaft play, soot buildup, or physical damage.

   If the turbocharger is wastegated, verify that the wastegate is not seized and is opening at the correct maximum boost pressure (e.g., ~35-38 psi).

   Fix Leaks

   If an exhaust or boost leak was identified during diagnostics, replace the compromised hoses, clamps, or gaskets.

   Repair Wiring

   If the sensor wiring is damaged, repair the harness or replace the connector pigtail.

   Replace Sensor

   If the wiring is intact, there are no system leaks, and the diagnostic tool shows erratic speed readings, remove and replace the turbocharger speed sensor.

   Turbocharger/Wastegate Replacement

   If the wastegate is mechanically seized or the turbocharger bearings/turbine are damaged, replace the turbocharger assembly.

   Clear and Test

   Clear the fault codes from the ECM using your diagnostic tool. Perform a test drive under heavy load to verify that the turbo speed remains within normal limits and the code does not return.
