Case IH 597-02 - UCM – UCM: Top of brake switch right circuit fault
Issue description
This fault code indicates an electrical issue—specifically a general circuit fault, erratic signal, or loss of communication—on the right-hand circuit of the upper brake switch. The system is detecting that the signal from the right brake pedal switch is either missing, out of range, or inconsistent with the expected parameters when the brake is applied or released.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series
Check the cause
Check right brake pedal operation to ensure it moves freely and returns to its resting position completely. A physically sticking pedal can cause an erratic signal.
Inspect the brake switch wiring harness and connector at the top of the right brake pedal arm for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion.
Test switch continuity by disconnecting the switch and using a multimeter across the terminals while manually actuating it. If it does not open/close properly, it has failed internally.
Inspect the multi-pin OEM connectors at the UCM for moisture, corrosion, or loose pins.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Switch
Remove the lower dash or steering console trim panels as necessary to gain clear access to the top of the brake pedal assembly.
Remove the Faulty Switch
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the right brake switch. Unthread or unclip the switch from its mounting bracket.
Install the New Switch
Thread or clip the new OEM brake switch into the bracket.
Adjust the Switch
Ensure the switch plunger is properly contacting the brake pedal arm so that it fully depresses when the pedal is released, and extends when the pedal is pressed.
Reconnect and Reassemble
Plug the electrical connector back in, reattach the trim panels, and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Turn the key to the ON position and use the AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive 597-02 fault code. Test the brakes to ensure the code does not return.
