Case IH 597 – Engine Controller (ECM / ENG): Battery voltage is too low
Issue description
The Engine Control Module's (ECM) battery voltage monitor circuit has detected that the system voltage has dropped below the normal operating range specified in the calibration (typically below 11-12 volts, or failing to reach the expected 13.5–14.5 volts while the engine is running). This condition will usually trigger a yellow engine warning lamp and can lead to network communication errors or sensor malfunctions if not addressed.

Check the cause
Check resting battery voltage and perform a battery load test to ensure batteries do not drop into the bad zone under load
Test alternator output voltage at the battery with the engine running (should read between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, not exceeding 15.0 volts)
Inspect the alternator drive belt for proper tension and signs of wear or cracking
Inspect all battery cables, ground lugs, starter connections, and power studs for loose connections, damaged crimps, or corrosion
Check engine fuses (e.g., fuse 1 and 2) at the main distribution panel
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery cables, starting with the negative terminal.
Safety First.
Remove any bolt-on battery cable ends and clean the terminals, power studs, and ground connections thoroughly.
Apply dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion, and securely reconnect them using good crimped cable ends.
Replace the batteries if they failed the load test or have dead cells (verified via a hydrometer/float test).
Note: Never replace just one battery in a paired system, as the alternator will overcharge the new one.
Inspect the alternator belt and replace it if it is slipping or cracked.
Perform this if the batteries and cables are good but the running voltage is still below 13.5V.
Remove and replace the alternator.
Perform this if the belt is tight and the alternator is still not outputting 13.5–14.5V.
Use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH AFS Pro display or an aftermarket tool like Jaltest) to clear the pending/stored 597 fault code.
Run the tractor to verify the code does not return and the voltage gauge reads correctly.
