Case IH 598 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Battery voltage is very low

This code is triggered when the voltage supplied to the controller drops below a critical threshold (approximately 11.5 volts). This often occurs during extended cranking, when the alternator fails, or after the tractor has been sitting unused.

   Battery Voltage Test: Measure the resting battery voltage at the terminals. It should be around 12.6V. If it is below 11.5V, the battery is discharged or failing.

   Charging System Test: Start the engine and measure the voltage across the battery terminals. It should read between 13.5V and 14.5V. If it does not increase, the alternator is likely not charging the system.

   Visual Inspection: Check the battery terminals, cables, and ground connections for heavy corrosion, looseness, or damage.

   Harness & ECU Supply Check: Verify the wiring harness supplying power to the Engine Controller (ECM) to ensure there are no voltage drops or shorts between the battery and the ECU.

   Clean and Tighten Connections

   Disconnect the battery cables (negative first). Clean the battery posts and cable terminals to remove any acid corrosion. Reconnect and tighten securely.

   Charge and Load Test the Battery

   If the battery is deeply discharged from sitting, charge it fully using a standalone charger. Perform a load test. If the battery fails the load test or will not hold a charge, replace it.

   Replace the Alternator (if applicable)

   If the battery is good but the charging system test shows no output, disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine/drive belt, disconnect the alternator wiring, and unbolt the alternator. Install the new alternator, reattach the wiring, and tension the belt to spec.

   Clear the Fault Code

   Once the voltage issue is resolved, the active fault code may move to a "stored" or "permanent" status. Cycle the tractor's power or use a diagnostic tool to clear the code from the ECU memory.
