Case IH 6 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) controller: Hitch Lower Solenoid High Side Driver circuit short to 12 volts
Issue description
The high-side driver circuit (the power supply side) for the solenoid responsible for lowering the rear 3-point hitch is receiving unintended 12-volt power. This short-to-power condition prevents the controller from properly regulating the solenoid, which can result in the hitch failing to lower, drifting, or becoming unresponsive.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection of Connectors: Inspect the lower solenoid connector for water ingress, corrosion, or damaged pins.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Test the internal resistance of the hitch lower solenoid (specification is 3.8 to 4.2 Ohms between Pin A to Pin C, and Pin B to Pin C).
Hitch Behavior Check: Observe the physical behavior of the hitch. If it does not lower at all, it is likely a stuck solenoid plunger or failed hitch valve; if it drifts down, the solenoid plunger may be sticking off-center to the left.
Harness Short Test: Disconnect the solenoid and turn the key ON. Probe the high-side driver wire on the harness side for 12V when the hitch is not being commanded to lower.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the rear hitch remote valve block (usually accessible from under the rear of the cab).
Isolate the Fault
Disconnect the wiring harness from the Hitch Lower Solenoid.
Test the Harness
Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use a multimeter to check for 12V on the harness connector's power pin. If 12V is present without a 'lower' command, trace the harness back to the TMF controller, locate the chafed wire shorting to power, and repair the wiring.
Test/Replace the Solenoid
If the harness is functioning correctly, test the solenoid pins with a multimeter. If the resistance falls outside the 3.8 - 4.2 Ohms range, the solenoid is internally shorted. Remove the retaining nut, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem, and install the new replacement solenoid.
Inspect the Plunger
While the solenoid is off, ensure the mechanical plunger inside the valve is not stuck. Clean away any debris. If the plunger is damaged, the entire hitch control valve may need replacement.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Reconnect all components. On older Magnum models, you can clear the error scan by toggling the hitch switch to the UP position, then holding it in the DOWN momentary position while starting the engine. Run the tractor and verify the hitch raises and lowers smoothly without throwing the TMF 6 code.
