Case IH 6006 – TCU (Transmission Control Unit): CAN-BUS Communication Error: MFD / Auto MFD / Front Differential Lock Switch Failure
Issue description
The system detects that the Mechanical Front Drive (MFD) switch, Auto MFD switch, or Front Differential Lock (4WD) switch has failed in the armrest console, receiving an invalid signal that prevents it from determining the operator's request.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Magnum
- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Magnum 235, 260, 290, 315, 340 (Series 4)
Check the cause
Check the MFD and Auto MFD rocker/membrane switches on the armrest for physical damage, sticking, or liquid intrusion (spilled drinks are a common cause).
Look for related codes on the Pro 700 display, such as 6007 (which indicates both MFD and Auto MFD switches are active simultaneously, pointing to a shorted switch).
Check the CAN-BUS communication harness between the Armrest Controller and the TCU. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses under the cab floor, or loose connections.
Unplug the armrest controller and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts during disassembly.
Access the Armrest Console
Remove the retaining screws securing the top cover of the Multi-Control Armrest to expose the internal switches and the Armrest Controller circuit board.
Test the Switch
Disconnect the electrical connector for the MFD/Diff Lock switch assembly. Using a digital multimeter, test the switch for continuity in all positions (Off, Manual MFD, Auto MFD). If the switch fails to show proper open/closed states, it must be replaced.
Inspect the Harness
If the switch tests good, inspect the wiring harness connecting the switch panel to the Armrest Controller, and the main harness exiting the armrest down to the TCU. Repair any broken wires or replace damaged connector pins.
Replace Components
If the switch is faulty, install the new switch assembly. If the switch and wiring are perfectly intact but the CAN-BUS error persists, the Armrest Controller itself has likely suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reassemble the armrest console and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Test
Turn the key on, use the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the 6006 fault code, and test the MFD and Auto MFD functions in the field to ensure the clutch engages and disengages properly.
