Case IH 6009 – MFD/Diff Lock (Mechanical Front Drive / Differential Lock) controller: Steering angle sensor below minimum voltage limit

Issue description

This fault indicates that the signal voltage returning from the steering angle position sensor to the controller has dropped below the minimum expected operating threshold. This condition typically points to a failed sensor, an open circuit in the signal or 5V supply wire, or a short to ground in the sensor wiring harness. When this data is lost, the auto-steer/guidance systems and automated MFD/Differential Lock disengagement functions are disabled.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the steering angle sensor on the front steering axle (or articulation joint) for physical damage, packed mud, or corrosion on the linkage, mounting bracket, and wiring harness.

  2. Disconnect the sensor harness and use a multimeter to verify the controller is sending a 5V reference voltage to the sensor and that there is a solid ground.

  3. Check the signal wire for continuity between the sensor connector and the MFD/ATC controller, ensuring it is not shorted to ground.

  4. Perform a sensor output test: if power and ground are present but the signal voltage returning to the controller remains near 0V while turning the steering wheel, the sensor has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for repair

    Park the tractor on a level surface, center the steering (wheels pointed straight ahead), turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the steering angle sensor assembly on the front axle.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove hardware and linkage

    Remove the mounting hardware (bolts/brackets) and disconnect the mechanical linkage arm attached to the sensor.

  5. Remove sensor

    Remove the faulty sensor.

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new steering angle sensor, reattach the linkage, and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness connector.

  8. Restore power

    Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor.

  9. Calibrate sensor

    You must calibrate the new steering angle sensor using the tractor's display monitor or a diagnostic service tool (like the Autopilot Toolbox). The controller needs to learn the new voltage values for the center, full-left, and full-right steering limits.
