Case IH 6012 – ATC (Advanced Tractor Control): Pressure of the pressure sensor in the steering system above the maximum permissible limit
Issue description
The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the steering pressure transducer that exceeds the programmed upper threshold (typically > 4.8V on a 5V reference circuit). This condition is usually caused by a short to power in the signal wire, an open ground circuit, an internally shorted sensor, or an actual hydraulic over-pressure event in the steering circuit.

Check the cause
Inspect the steering pressure sensor wire harness for chafing, melting, or pinching that could cause a short to power.
Disconnect the 3-pin connector at the sensor. Check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the connector.
Turn the key ON (engine off). Use a multimeter to verify the sensor is receiving a 5V reference and has a solid ground. Check the signal wire voltage. If the signal voltage is stuck high (above 4.5V–4.8V) while unplugged, there is a short to power in the harness. If the voltage drops to 0V when unplugged but spikes when plugged in (with no hydraulic pressure), the sensor is internally shorted.
If the sensor and wiring test fine, connect a mechanical pressure gauge to the steering priority valve test port to verify that the steering system is not actually experiencing an over-pressure condition due to a stuck relief valve.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Turn off the engine and cycle the steering wheel back and forth to relieve residual hydraulic pressure in the steering orbital and priority valve circuits.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the steering pressure sensor, which is typically threaded into the steering priority valve block or the hydraulic lines leading from the steering orbital valve.
Disconnect
Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.
Remove Sensor
Using the appropriate wrench, unthread the faulty pressure transducer. Have a rag ready to catch minor hydraulic fluid drips.
Prep the New Sensor
Ensure the new O-ring is properly seated on the new sensor. Lubricate the O-ring with clean hydraulic fluid.
Install
Thread the new sensor into the port and tighten to OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect & Test
Plug the 3-pin connector back in. Start the tractor, cycle the steering lock-to-lock, and check the sensor port for leaks.
Clear Codes
Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the inactive 6012 fault code.
