6013

Case IH 6013 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) or PTO Controller: PTO Solenoid Open Circuit or Shorted to Ground

Issue description

The PTO (Power Take-Off) Solenoid has failed due to an open circuit or is shorted to ground, preventing the system from actuating the PTO clutch valve.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • MX Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • CVX Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness routed between the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) and the PTO valve solenoid for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched areas that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the PTO solenoid (Connector No. 159 on MX Magnums) and ensure it is not damaged, pins are in the correct position, free of corrosion, and fit tightly.

  3. Using a multimeter, check for continuity in the wiring harness from the controller to the solenoid connector to rule out a broken wire (open circuit).

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the PTO solenoid itself. If the multimeter reads infinite resistance (OL) or zero resistance, the solenoid coil has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and the key is removed.

  2. Locate the PTO solenoid valve on the transmission/PTO hydraulic valve block.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the PTO solenoid.

  4. Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  5. Unscrew and remove the faulty PTO solenoid cartridge valve from the manifold.

Have a rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.

  6. Lubricate the O-rings on the new PTO solenoid valve with clean hydraulic oil.

  7. Thread the new solenoid into the manifold and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  9. Start the tractor and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab diagnostic display to clear the fault codes.

  10. Engage the PTO to verify proper operation and ensure the 6013 code does not return.
