Case IH 6014 – Hitch Controller, Armrest Controller, or TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Hitch Lower Solenoid is failed open or shorted to the ground
Issue description
The controller detects that the circuit for the hitch's lowering solenoid is incomplete (open circuit, such as a broken wire or burnt-out coil) or has shorted out to the ground. This condition prevents the hitch from receiving the command to lower.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- MX Magnum series
- Magnum series
- STX Steiger series
- Steiger series
- CX series
- 8900 series
Check the cause
Disconnect the wiring harness at the hitch controller connector (e.g., C058). Test the resistance of the hitch lower solenoid to determine if the coil itself has failed open.
Test the continuity of the wiring harness from the hitch controller to the hitch lower solenoid to rule out a broken wire.
Inspect the wiring harness between the controller and the solenoid for rubbed or pinched areas that could cause a short to ground.
Repair steps
Locate valve block
Locate the hitch control valve block on the tractor (typically at the rear near the hitch assembly).
Inspect wiring connector
Inspect the wiring connector directly at the hitch lower solenoid. Clean any corrosion and ensure the connection is tight.
Repair or replace wiring harness
If the diagnostic tests reveal a wiring fault, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.
Replace solenoid if necessary
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance test, the solenoid must be replaced.
Relieve hydraulic pressure
Safety First: Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the hitch system before removing the solenoid.
Remove faulty solenoid
Unscrew and remove the faulty hitch lower solenoid from the valve block.
Install new solenoid
Install the new solenoid, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid.
Reconnect electrical harness
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear fault codes and test
Clear the fault codes from the controller and test the hitch operation to verify the repair.
