Case IH 6014 – Hitch Controller / EDC, Transmission ECU, or MIU: Hitch Lower Solenoid, Transmission Gear Solenoid, or Frame Fold Solenoid Short/Open

Issue description

The controller has detected that the electrical circuit for the solenoid has failed open or is shorted to ground. This means the voltage being sent to the solenoid coil is finding a premature path to ground (a short) or the coil itself has an internal break (open circuit), preventing the solenoid from actuating the hydraulic valve.

Check the cause

  1. Clear the fault code, cycle the key switch, and operate the machine. If the code returns, proceed with electrical testing.

  2. For Tractors (Hitch Solenoid): Disconnect the Green connector (C058) from the Hitch Controller. Inspect terminals in cavities 1 and 3 to ensure they are not damaged, bent, or dislocated.

  3. For Tractors (Hitch Solenoid): Measure the resistance between pin 1 and pin 3. OEM Resistance Specs: ~5.1 ohms at -40°C (-40°F); 6.4 to 6.8 ohms at 25°C (77°F); ~9.5 ohms at 100°C (212°F).

  4. Test at the Solenoid: If the resistance at the controller is out of range, disconnect the solenoid connector (e.g., C152) directly at the valve. Test the resistance of the solenoid coil itself.

  5. Harness Check: If the solenoid tests within specification, carefully inspect the wiring harness between the controller and the solenoid for an intermittent open circuit or a short to ground (chassis rub-through).

  6. Transmission ECU Check (Carraro): For transmission code 6014, check the wiring of the 3rd/4th gear solenoids and verify the connection at ECU pins 10 and 38.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Isolate the Fault

    Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the fault lies in the wiring harness or the solenoid coil itself.

  3. Wiring Repair

    If the harness is shorted to ground, locate the chafed wire, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, and re-loom the harness.

  4. Solenoid Replacement

    If the solenoid coil fails the resistance test, clean the area around the hydraulic valve block to prevent contamination. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off the cartridge. (If the cartridge itself is leaking or damaged, unthread it from the valve body and replace it). Slide the new solenoid coil onto the cartridge and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector (ensure the weather seal is intact). Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration/Clearing

    Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes, and test the operation of the hitch or transmission to verify the repair.
