Case IH 6021 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electronic Management Unit (EMU) / Armrest Controller: FWD Solenoid Stuck on

The control system detects the FWD solenoid is either electrically shorted to power (remaining energized) or the hydraulic spool valve is physically stuck in the actuated position. This may prevent the FWD from engaging or disengaging properly.

   Verify if the code is active or stored. Check if companion codes (like 6022 'FWD Solenoid Stuck off' or 6023 'FWD solenoid open circuit') are also present.

   Swap the FWD solenoid coil with a neighboring identical solenoid (such as the Differential Lock solenoid). If the fault code changes to the Diff Lock circuit (e.g., Code 7016), the solenoid coil is faulty. If the 6021 code remains, the issue is in the wiring harness or the controller.

   Check the FWD switch in the cab. Test the wiring harness leading to the FWD solenoid for a short to 12V power. Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil (a healthy coil typically reads around 9 ohms).

   Install a pressure gauge on the shuttle valve port or the regulated pressure line running to the FWD clutch pack. Actuate the FWD switch and look for a pressure spike to confirm if the valve spool is physically shifting.

   Safely park the tractor on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

   Locate the FWD solenoid valve assembly on the transmission housing.

   Generally located on the side of the transmission housing or shuttle valve block near the front of the rear axle.

   Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the solenoid.

   If replacing just the coil: Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem and slide the old magnetic coil off. Slide the new coil on and torque the nut to spec.

   If replacing the entire cartridge valve (due to a stuck spool): Unthread the cartridge valve from the manifold block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve with clean hydraulic oil and thread it into the block.

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Start the tractor, clear the fault codes, and test the FWD engagement/disengagement (listen for the mechanical change or verify via pressure gauge) to ensure the repair was successful.
